Here's what I'm willing to splurge on:
- Wedding Gown (it's a once in a life time thing, and I'm going to wear it for my life event, so to me, that's worth a splurge)
as you can see, my list of things to splurge on is really tiny (in fact, only one), as most of the things I feel, are for "show", and I really don't care about them much. but well, that's me, so lets not judge one another. :)
Here's the list of things I refused to spend additional money on:
- Wedding invites
- most banquet venues offer free invites, so just utilize it! they won't give you a discount even if you don't use it. seriously, who will remember/keep the invite you give out? usually the invites will end up in the bin, and nobody really pay attention to its design, other than date/time/venue. and I'm not really sure I'll feel comfortable seeing my photos (printed on the invite) in the rubbish bin. =))
- Wedding Favors
- another thing most banquet venues provide. maybe i'm stingy or lazy or borxim, but i don't see the reason to spend extra moolas trying to get something from chatuchak or anywhere else.
- Additional Pre-Wedding Shoot Photos
- most bridal boutique will probably want to throw eggs at me for saying this because this is a lucrative income for most bridal shops. yes, it's normal to feel excited looking at the photos, but honestly, if you calm down and take a closer look, you'll realized alot of the photos looks similar (do you really need 5 images in that same outfit with similar poses just looking front, up, down, at each other, away from each other?) the shots are for memory sake and like most people would have told you, these photos will end up in the store or below your bed. it's really not worth spending another couple of hundreds or thousands on these extra photos cos you probably won't take another look at it after the wedding. I was quite determined about not spending another cent on extra photos so i was quite "fierce" in excluding photos from my selection to the point that the sales person was quite stunned. She did try to sway me alittle saying this one nice, that one nice, you need to choose another X number of photos from that outfit to make up that page etc blah blah blah but I'm thankful I'm not easily influenced by sales talk.
- Flowers
- again, another item that the venue will provide and i feel that's sufficient for me. I doubt my guest will know or even notice if I've spent thousands on imported flowers from <insert coountry>. and doubt they will appreciate it anyway.
of course, if you're super rich, go ahead and import exquisite flowers, wedding favors, and get top artists to design your wedding invite. go ahead and splurge if you can afford it. I think this post is more for the regular peeps out there. I've seen regular people saving so hard, or getting into debts just so they can create a "fairy tale wedding" that they can show off. yes, it's a once in a lifetime thing, but you probably should also consider is it really worth it? a wedding is only for 1 day, but a marriage is for life. is it really worth it to get into debt, or save like mad just for a 1 day event? I honestly feel the money is better spent on honeymoon, house and family. again, this is my personal opinion, and maybe a food for thought for you? :)
